PM Sheikh Hasina springs cabinet surprises

In a surprising move, Sheikh Hasina has made a significant overhaul by excluding 30 of her former colleagues, including some prominent figures, to constitute her new council of ministers, which is scheduled to take the oath of office this evening.

The upcoming council of ministers will consist of 37 members, with 15 new ministers, marking the smallest cabinet in recent decades unless additional members are added. Sheikh Hasina herself will be sworn in today as the Prime Minister for an unprecedented fourth consecutive term, solidifying her status as the longest-serving PM in Bangladesh's history.

President Mohammed Shahabuddin extended an invitation to Hasina, who also serves as the Awami League chief, to form the new government following the AL's victory in Sunday's election.

Cabinet Secretary Mahbub Hossain disclosed the names of the 37 council of ministers, comprising 25 ministers and 11 state ministers in addition to the prime minister.

"I have informed them of their appointments and extended my congratulations," he stated.

The oath-taking ceremony will be administered by the president at Bangabhaban at 7:00 pm.
